It’s a first Festival visit for Ethiopian musician and arranger Mulatu Astatke, recognized as the father of Ethio-jazz and the man behind a significant portion of the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers. With a new album, Sketches of Ethiopia, this brilliant musical expeditionary mixes modern jazz with traditional Ethiopian music, Latino rhythms and Caribbean reggae, armed with his faithful vibraphone and congas. The result is, quite simply, magical and spellbinding.
