RENDEZ-VOUS DES RYTHMES DU MONDE | TRIO POPULAIRE

The recipient of the 2013 Diversity Award, Trio populaire is inspired by a variety of musical traditions, drawing from the many different sources of world music. Its unique repertoire combines jazzy klezmer melodies with Berber, flamenco, Brazilian, and gypsy rhythms in original compositions that leave plenty of room for improvisation. Trio populaire is made up of Pierre Emmanuel Poizat on the clarinet, delivering a world of music ranging from gypsy and klezmer styles to Brazilian choro and jazz—forming the basis of the trio’s repertoire—, guitarist Joey Mallat, bringing his own solid rumba rhythms, love of jazz harmony, and improvisational and compositional talents to the mix, and Tacfarinas Kichou, giving the ensemble its power and intensity with his virtuoso percussion.
