Percussive instruments fashioned out of discarded household trash, guitars made from metal plates, just about anything can inspire these artistically resourceful and recycling geniuses. Environmentally and socially engaged, the Kin’Gongolo Kiniata band, whose songs are sung in the Lingala language, has become a sensation on the new Kinshasa music scene, inventively incorporating traditional Congolese rhythms with stroboscopic effects, repeatedly copying street sounds and reassembling them to create a fast-paced, groovy urban rhythm.
