Ulrich Seidl strikes again: after his foray into the pop world of crooner named Richie Bravo, this follow-up to RIMINI seizes on Richie’s brother Ewald, who breaks up with his Romanian girlfriend and moves to the country. But when he hooks up with a few local young boys to transform a derelict school into a fortress, Ewald arouses the ire of the villagers.
In this conclusion to his diptych about the impossibility of escaping the past, the Austrian director continues his exploration of the touchiest subjects while avoiding facile provocation. Instead, his film, carried by the outstanding performance of Georg Friedrich, questions, confronts and churns up the darkest aspects of human nature.
