This rivetingly in-your-face first instalment of a two-parter is a keenly observed, savagely funny portrayal of the aimless end of an artist’s career, set against the backdrop of Europe in turmoil. With his trademark irony, the Austrian filmmaker delivers a tragicomic portrait of a pathetic yet appealing entertainer, marvellously played by Michael Thomas.
