THE MULTIPLE ASPECTS OF JEAN DEROME

L’Orchestre nationale de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) welcomes multi-instrumentalist and composer Jean Derome. He will conduct the interpretation of a new work commissioned by the ONJ, as well as that of pieces from the repertoire of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn. For some of these, he will even choose the role of the singer, not as a crooner looking after his own character, but rather as a demiurge, a craftsman aware of the sacred character of the sound world he generates. His new piece announces a clever response to the paradox of composed jazz. How could a master of improvisation restrict the top flight soloists he has?
