For years, filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin has been documenting Indigenous peoples’ struggle to secure the same rights for their children as all other Canadians enjoy. Her 53rd film takes the infamous case of Jordan River Anderson, a child with a serious muscular condition. Jordan died in 2005 without leaving the hospital, because of the lack of an agreement between the federal and Manitoba governments. The case gave rise to “Jordan’s Principle,” allowing equal access to public services for Indigenous children. Based on archival footage and numerous interviews, the filmmaker immortalizes Jordan’s life and the legal struggle that led, with great difficulty, to a policy addressing the most fundamental of human rights.
