Austria, 1986: during the country’s presidential election campaign, Kurt Waldheim, an acclaimed diplomat who was Secretary General of the United Nations throughout the 1970s, suffers a series of blows to his reputation as revelations emerge about his questionable past as a member of the Wehrmacht. But the news doesn’t weaken his electoral chances – quite the opposite. Through brilliant use of public archival materials and footage she captured at the time, Ruth Beckermann unpacks one of the biggest scandals in Austria’s political history. Denial, lies, attacks turned around into nationalist propaganda: the Waldheim case foreshadowed both Austria’s reactionary future and that of the world as a whole. (BD)
