Austria, 1986: during the country’s presidential election campaign, Kurt Waldheim, an acclaimed diplomat who was Secretary General of the United Nations throughout the 1970s, suffers a series of blows to his reputation as revelations emerge about his questionable past as a member of the Wehrmacht. But the news doesn’t weaken his electoral chances – quite the opposite. Through brilliant use of public archival materials and footage she captured at the time, Ruth Beckermann unpacks one of the biggest scandals in Austria’s political history.
