BERT DANCKAERT | TRUE NATURE

We are thrilled to present the first solo exhibition by the Belgian artist/photographer Bert Danckaert who lives and works in Antwerp. The artist travels extensively throughout the world in search of his subject. Whether his travels take him to China, Thailand, Mexico, Cuba or here in Québec the artist carefully selects his composition before deciding on taking his photograph. With this measured approach Danckaert allows the elements chosen in the frame to speak for themselves.

Bert Danckaert's meticulous compositions that are part documentary, formalist and minimalist, lets color, form and the coherence of the composition become the main feature of the impeccably crafted result. Even though his careful compositions might evoke abstract painting compositions, the subject matter is always the reality of the built environment.

Excluding any human figure, a position that Lynne Cohen also favoured, an artist in which Danckaert recognizes as an important influence, he uniformises the urban space. Never reframed or retouched nor including artificial lighting, his compositions seem to present a time suspended, stopped. His interpretation of the urban space leads the spectator to reconsider the aesthetics of their surroundings and invites them to reconsider their environment.
