Camille Durand Gauthier is an interdisciplinary artist presently living and studying in Montreal. While affiliated to the Studio Arts program at Concordia University, she focuses mainly on practices surrounding photography and fibres. Through her project entitled Spectrum, the artist presents a palette of representations and symbols associated to puberty. From repulsion to attraction, the imagery portrays the various bodily and psychological changes involved in the coming of age. While borrowing iconography from visual culture, the artist opens a dialogue on contemporary issues such as intimacy versus belonging to a community, the building of representations, and expectations driven by stereotypes. As she evokes the shift from childhood to adulthood, the artist also invites the viewer to question the place of identity in the larger context of a society. Spectrum is the representation of one’s desire for intimacy and individuality in response to the constant expansion of the public sphere.

Opening: February 22, 2018 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be shown until March 29.
