Living in a rough Miami neighborhood with an addict mother, Chiron whose nickname is Little, is very introverted. Until he reaches his teens, he experiences a very solitary childhood existence. But when he clues in on his attraction to men, Little starts being ridiculed and bullied by his classmates. Wishing to escape a future of persecution, he becomes a gangster in the image of his model and tutor, Juan. Now that he is respected as a man, even feared, Chiron begins a love relationship with Azu. Will he be able to assume his homosexuality in a world where all our actions are perpetually being judged?
