VOX is organizing a retrospective of Serge Tousignant’s work, which will cover the whole of the artist’s œuvre, including his sculptural, pictorial, photographic and installation practices. In the aim of anchoring an in-depth study of Tousignant’s output in the context of a historiography of exhibitions in Québec, this retrospective features works from landmark exhibitions since the 1960s in which the artist participated. In tandem with this retrospective, a monograph will be published, furthering the study of significant exhibitions in Serge Tousignant’s career so as to understand how these represented for him a veritable laboratory where research and experimentation were permitted.

Born in 1942, Serge Tousignant’s interdisciplinary practice has been characterised by photographic experimentation since 1960. His work is included in several major public, corporate and private collections, both national and international. As a founding member of the artist-run centre Véhicule Art, which came into being in 1972, Tousignant played a crucial role in the development of the local art scene. He was also a professor of visual arts in the Université de Montréal’s Art History department from 1974 to 2002. He is represented by Galerie Graff in Montreal.
