THINKING TOGETHER ABOUT THE VALUE(S) AND CHALLENGES OF CULTURAL DISTRICTS

On Thursday, May 25 at 9 a.m., cultural actors, public space managers and creators concerned with the development and dynamism of cultural districts are invited to this day specially dedicated to the meeting of the Montreal cultural ecosystem and Canadian and international stakeholders.

Join more than 200 managers of cultural districts and venues or urban area with a high concentration of artists, international experts and decision-makers for and extensive program of presentations, discussion, networking, and end the day at the opening party of the Jardins Gamelin!

The conference day will take place at Place des Arts and is co-presented by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, in collaboration with Quartier des spectacles international.

The conference is part of the ninth annual convening of the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN) from May 22 to 26, 2023, in Montreal, Canada. This year’s theme is the value(s) of cultural districts.

This international event is made possible thanks to the support of the Caisse Desjardins de la Culture, Jackworld, the the Société de développement commercial Montréal centre-ville, Tourisme Montreal, the Ville de Montréal and the Gouvernement du Québec, including SODEC, the Ministère des relations internationales et de la Francophonie, the Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie and the ministère de la Culture des des Communications.

Presentations and panels will be offered by local and international actors on topics related to the theme of the GCDN convening: the value(s) of cultural districts.

The 2023 convening of the Global Cultural Districts Network

The convening will bring together in Montreal, May 22-26, 2023, more than 200 international cultural and civic leaders to discuss the value(s) of cultural districts in a changing world.

Nearly 80 speakers and panelists will explore a wide range of topics, including:

  • New trends of globalization
  • Equitable leadership in the arts and culture
  • Cultural tourism in the 2020s
  • Centering the Indigenous experience
  • Public art and the identity of place
  • Impact measurement and reporting strategies
  • Safety and security in public spaces

May 22: Convening opening and welcome cocktail at the Société des arts technologiques

May 23 and May 24: Convening reserved for GCDN delegates and cultural managers

May 25: Public day for the Quebec creative and cultural ecosystem, with a session led by selected creative companies

May 26: Site visits (Oasis, PHI, Place des Arts, Maison Symphonique, Grands Ballets) and cultural territories in Montreal

WHAT IS THE GCDN ?

With members from around the world, the GCDN brings together cultural institutions and districts responsible for designing, financing, building and operating zones in cities with a strong creative and artistic component. Members share emerging best practices, the place of cultural districts and complexes in urban policy, economic development and related areas of public policy such as travel, culture and tourism. These topics are also discussed at the annual GCDN conference.
