LE MIGNONISME BY PHILIPPE KATERINE

A series of monumental works revealing the rosy side of life

Press release - For Immediate Release

Montreal, April 10, 2024 – The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership is pleased to announce a new set of public artworks, Le Mignonisme, by French artist Philippe Katerine, on display from May 7 to September 29, 2024. The fifteen monumental pink sculptures will take over downtown Montreal from the Quartier des Spectacles and Place des Arts to the Esplanade PVM at Place Ville Marie and Phillips Square. Montrealers, festivalgoers and visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the quirky, poetic and hilarious world of the multifaceted artist. Philippe Katerine will be in Montreal on May 7 to unveil the works.

Getting to know Monsieur Rose

The sculptures, made of resin and standing up to 2.7 metres tall, are called the Monsieur Rose (“Mr. Pink”) – the emblems of Mignonisme. This artistic movement, founded by Philippe Katerine, celebrates beauty in simplicity and wonderment in the everyday. With his touching and funny creations, the artist will turn downtown Montreal into his playground – with a delightfully silly touch.

Collectively, the Monsieur Rose comprise an original artwork to be explored all summer. They will be found indoors and outdoors in the Quartier des Spectacles, Place des Arts, the Centre Eaton de Montréal and Place Montréal Trust; at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth; beneath the Ring on the Esplanade PVM at Place Ville Marie; and in Phillips Square. All of these spaces and partners will contribute to hosting the fun art walk, giving the downtown core a big splash of pink this summer!

Experiencing the art of Mignonisme with Philippe Katerine

To accompany the opening of the Mignonisme art walk, a special presentation and concert titled Ce que je sais de la mort, Ce que je sais de l’amour (“what I know about death, what I know about love”) by the Frères Philippe – Philippe Katerine and musician Philippe Eveno – will be presented for free on May 7 in the Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts at 8 p.m. During this unique event, presented in collaboration with Place des Arts, the audience will experience a uniquely intimate evening. Free tickets for the event will be made available on Monday, April 22, at noon via the Place des Arts website: www.placedesarts.com

In addition to the sculpture series, a video bringing the Monsieur Rose sculptures to life, created by Montreal artist Jérémy Fassio in collaboration avec Philippe Katerine, will be presented on the projection surfaces of the Édifice WILDER – Espace Danse starting May 7 and the projection surface outside Saint-Laurent metro station starting May 13. The work will also be presented on the mosaic of screens inside the Place des Arts, accompanied by the French artist’s music, as soon as the sculptures are unveiled. Children are invited to enjoy creative workshops on the subject of Mignonisme, including the chance to design miniature Monsieur Rose sculptures. The workshops will run all summer in the Esplanade Tranquille pavilion, starting May 11.

Details of the art walk and related activities will be announced Monday, April 22.
