Spotlight on emerging digital creators in the Quartier des spectacles

Video projections by six artists, collectives and studios on three surfaces from September 5 to 23

PRESS RELEASE | For immediate release

Montreal, September 4, 2024 – The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership is pleased to announce the inaugural edition of a new video projection series called La rentrée de la relève, running from September 5 to 23, 2024. For 3 weeks, video projections by six groups of emerging artists will be shown on the façades of the Wilder Building – Espace danse, UQAM’s Pavillon Président-Kennedy and the Grande Bibliothèque, showcasing the talent of digital creators from Montreal and the rest of Quebec.

Each highly distinctive projection explores a specific theme in a unique style. The works were selected following a call for proposals issued in the spring of this year. The six artists and teams are: Antoine Grenier and Henri Carreau; Émile Désilets; FIAT LVX; Hugo Mazo; Chaimae Khouldi and Tamara Manny-D’Astous; and TRANSVERSAL. The winners were selected based on the power and originality of their proposals. Each work is perfectly matched to the three projection surfaces, making the event an opportunity to explore both the Quartier and compelling artistic approaches. The call for proposals will be repeated next year for a second edition.

“The Quartier des Spectacles is a space for creation and experimentation at any stage of an artist’s career. With this video projection series, we are delighted to be able to provide a high-profile platform for emerging digital artists. The works were selected through a call for proposals. We hope this will inspire creators to keep developing their practices,” said Émilie Chabot, director of development and programming for the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

Six talented teams and individuals ; six unique experiences to discover

For this first edition of the event, the jury comprised a group of industry professionals: Em-P Labbée (producer, QDSinternational), Michel Lefebvre (executive director, TOPO), Gabriel Poirier-Galarneau (artist and founder, CHAMPAGNE CLUB SANDWICH), Nelly Ève Rajotte (artist and professor, École de Design at UQAM), Cecilia Ramirez (Director, partnerships and business development, National Film Board of Canada). They selected the following six works :

Postcards by Antoine Grenier and Henri Carreau

This contemplative projection uses the building façade to open windows on landscapes that correspond to moments and facets of our lives. The work is inspired by the creators’ pasts, reflecting the big dreamers and larger-than-life personalities who shaped their lives as emerging artists.

Short Circuit by Émile Désilets

A work that explores the vicious circle created by digital technology. The ubiquity and growing accessibility of the internet have mesmerized our entire society, blurring the boundaries between the real and digital worlds. This projection aims to inspire viewers to rethink their relationship with the digital world.

A.I. Architect by FIAT LVX

Featuring original works of art that explore new AI-based generative imaging and video animation techniques, this projection transforms UQAM’s Pavillon Président-Kennedy. Its technological landscapes and varied styles evolve and change, highlighting the building’s structure through dynamic and architecturally integrated video projections.

All Is Chaos In The Best Of Worlds by Hugo Mazo

This projection is adapted from a multidisciplinary performance piece based on improvised dance routines. The images are processed, blended and repeated, resulting in structured chaos. It is a journey to the heart of a very personal “rave life” where we gather, meet, have fun, isolate and heal. Hugo Mazo presents a profound visual exploration of the shared experience of clubs, music and dance, for everyone, right in the heart of Montreal.

Tire-toi une bûche by Chaimae Khouldi and Tamara Manny-D'Astous

This artistic projection puts creative women in the spotlight. Based on a dozen interviews with local artists, the project presents their experiences and realities, with illustrations and movements rendering their stories visually.

Équinoxe Chromatique by TRANSVERSAL

With autumn around the corner, Chromatic Equinox magnifies the last rays of summer light before cold overtakes the downtown core. The project aims to extend the summer in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles with a warm celebration of the season’s ephemeral beauty.
