Press release | For immediate release

Montreal, January 31, 2023The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and TRIBU are pleased to announce the inaugural edition of APIK, a new sports-themed winter event in the heart of Montreal, from February 24 to March 5. The Quartier Latin will host a series of free, accessible activities, starting in grand style with a skiing and snowboarding competition on Saint-Denis Street! A special adrenaline-charged program will be available for people of all ages who want to get some exercise and have fun during break week. The event, produced by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, is made possible by the financial support of the borough of Ville-Marie, Tourisme Montréal and the Gouvernement du Québec, with the collaboration of SDC du Quartier Latin and the Ville de Montréal. The event is part of the Moments lumineux du cœur de l'île initiative, which enriches the winter experience downtown.

The creators of the JACKALOPE action-sports festival, which has put on breathtaking displays for Montrealers each year for the last decade, with skateboarding, climbing and BASE jumping competitions, are back with a new and equally bold urban concept. One hundred male and female athletes will square off for the chance to win a $20,000 prize in the judged competition, with points awarded for skill and style. The urban competition course, custom-made for the event, will put competitors to the test as they slide downhill in an electric atmosphere full of dazzling lights and festive sounds. Because watching the competition is just as exciting as competing, a large audience is expected. This competition is an original idea by TRIBU, realized in collaboration with White Claw.

Detailed schedule.

By bringing the mountain spirit to the city, Saint-Denis Street in the Quartier Latin will become a snow park where snowboarding and snowskating enthusiasts can join ja Jam or simply amuse themselves on the training hill from March 2 to 5. Experienced monitors will be available to help participants if needed. Snowboarders must bring their own equipment, while snowskates will be available on-site.

APIK is an unprecedented playground that will also feature a thrilling obstacle course.

The merchants of the Quartier Latin will help set the mood with après-ski for all! And, for the grand opening of APIK on February 25, l’Abreuvoir Bar & Terrasse will host an after-party on its heated terrasse, presented in collaboration with White Claw, where the athletes in the competition will be joined by anyone who wants to be part of the fun.

“It is very exciting to see a new winter event like APIK in the Quartier Latin. Our administration, which encourages everyone to experience the best of winter in Montreal, is proud to support this pilot project, which will enhance the wintertime liveliness and success of this iconic neighbourhood. Throughout the week, a variety of events will be organized for people of all ages, and heated terrasses will be set up on public land right on Saint-Denis Street, to the delight of the public and local businesses,” said Robert Beaudry, City Councillor for Saint-Jacques and head of urban planning, citizen participation and democracy on the executive committee of the Ville de Montréal.

“Montreal is our playground! We create and develop daring concepts that inspire unique, adrenaline-charged moments,” said TRIBU president Micah Desforges. “Our mission is to highlight action sports by creating opportunities for communities to get together, celebrate their passion and reach the next level. With APIK, we’re bringing the spirit of the mountains to the city, and we’ll get to see some amazing talent up close!”

“We are pleased to contribute to this new winter event. APIK is consistent with the action plan for the improvement of the Quartier Latin and the winter programming strategy of the Quartier des Spectacles. Thanks to the collaboration of committed stakeholders, the event is perfectly in tune with the revitalization of this dynamic and vital neighbourhood,” said Monique Simard, chair of the board of directors for the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

“We are very proud to host a winter event of this scale in the Quartier Latin. APIK will help maintain the positive dynamic we have seen in recent months,” said Franck Subra, executive director of SDC du Quartier Latin.

Les moments lumineux du cœur de l’île is downtown Montreal’s collaborative winter project. It is the result of a fruitful collaboration among the Alliance centre-ville partners: the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, SDC Montréal centre-ville, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal and the Ville de Montréal, in collaboration with Tourisme Montréal. The initiative is a continuation of a series of summer projects launched in 2020. The winter Moments comprise a variety of outdoor activities organized by the partners and other cultural and economic stakeholders active in the area bounded by Atwater, Sherbrooke and Papineau streets and the St. Lawrence River.  The Moments include a host of original winter activities to be enjoyed outdoors in the downtown core: interactive and luminous installations and experiences, festivals and events, exceptional opportunities to meet talented local artisans, beautifully illuminated public spaces and other delightful surprises. From November to March, the Moments invite Montrealers, visitors and tourists to enjoy the luminous winter wonders of the heart of the island that make Montreal a unique winter destination.
