LA GRANDE RENTRÉE DU QUARTIER LATIN: A NEW FESTIVE EVENT TO KICK OFF THE FALL CULTURAL SEASON AND CELEBRATE THE RETURN TO SCHOOL

Press release | For immediate release

Montreal, August 10, 2022 – The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and the Société de développement commercial (SDC) du Quartier latin are pleased to announce the first edition of La grande rentrée du Quartier latin, an event on Saint-Denis St. marking students’ return to classes, from September 8 to 10. With an inviting atmosphere on pedestrianized Saint-Denis St., featuring a new green design, students, Montrealers and visitors are invited to enjoy an extensive cultural program of music, dance, improv theatre and other street activities, including three big festive evenings on September 8, 9 and 10.

This new event in the Quartier Latin will showcase everything this vibrant student neighbourhood and cultural hotbed has to offer. Major francophone cultural institutions and universities, as well as some 50 bars and restaurants, will participate along with the many students who are putting their many talents into the program. Three large parties are scheduled: a launch party in Les Jardins Gamelin, La nocturne du Quartier latin and, to close out this first edition, a big party for all. Full program details will be announced at the end of August.

La grande rentrée du Quartier latin is the result of a special collaboration with the Ville de Montréal and Quartier Latin organizations, mainly the Université du Québec à Montréal, Cégep du Vieux Montréal and the Cinémathèque québécoise, which all share the goal of revitalizing the neighbourhood.

A new and proudly Latin design

From now until the end of the fall, visitors can enjoy a new layout on the pedestrianized section of Saint-Denis Street, between De Maisonneuve Blvd. and Sherbrooke St. W.: the Agora Maximus by LAAB Collective, in collaboration with Signature design communication. Comprising several clusters of street furniture made from modular bleachers, with ample vegetation and linking graphic designs on the ground, the space invites visitors to take a break from their wanderings and provides a very welcoming setting for socializing. It is complemented with decorations in the windows of vacant storefronts, featuring inspiring quotations about the Quartier Latin. Agora Maximus is inspired by two iconic elements of Latin culture: the Agora, the gathering place for cultural and civic activities; and the Circus Maximus, a place for entertainment and heritage. This signature project will return in enhanced form in 2023 and 2024.
