A playful new installation opening April 21 in the Quartier des Spectacles

Press release | For immediate release

Montreal, April 11, 2022 – On April 21 the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership will unveil a fun and colourful new interactive installation, Ville orchestre by Robocut Studio, Dpt. and Vallée Duhamel. Located on the Promenade des Artistes, the work invites Montrealers and visitors to become musicians for a few minutes. The free activity will allow people to play together to create a soothing concerto or a gleeful cacophony, whatever fits the mood!

A LIVING URBAN INSTRUMENT

In the summer of 2021, the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership issued a call for proposals to replace the iconic 21 Balançoires/21 Swings, an installation created by Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat of Daily tous les jours. After the call, several Montreal-based artists and interactive studios were invited to present detailed proposals for a new interactive experience to be presented each spring for the next five years. The finalist teams were Lateral Office; Robocut Studio, Dpt. and Vallée Duhamel; Paysages; and Audiotopie with Serge Maheu and Luce Pelletier.

Following the presentations, the consortium of Robocut Studio, Dpt. and Vallée Duhamel won with Ville orchestre, an installation intended as an allegory for the one-man-band. It is an urban playground evoking the world of childhood; it invites us to escape, and to connect with our creativity and each other through chance encounters.

“The jury liked the strong iconic potential, original art direction and refined design of the proposal by Robocut Studio, Dpt. and Vallée Duhamel. Ville orchestre integrates with the DNA of the Quartier’s public spaces by offering an engaging universal experience for audiences of all ages,” said Éric Lefebvre, executive director of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

Ville orchestre will become part of your daily routine, like a breath of fresh air crossing your path, from April 21 to May 29.
