Montreal, August 24, 2023 – Until the end of September, the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership will present a dozen of free outdoor activities and events. Montrealers and visitors are invited to keep enjoying the summer as long as possible with interactive and musical installations, new original video projections and a creature walk. Not to mention the highlights of this lively and festive late-summer month, which will undoubtedly be the major exhibition Vibrer ensemble, 20 ans d’expériences mémorables in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Quartier des Spectacles, La grande rentrée du Quartier Latin and the Fête du Quartier.

 

New art installations to discover

Lucia

Until September 17
Le Parterre

Lucia is a new multimedia work by Mirari and Anne Lagacé that combines classical music, sculpture, animation and dance. It invites passers-by to become part of a tale with universal appeal, echoing the past and reflecting the present, by turning the cranks on a giant music box.

Le chant de l’arbre

September 21 to 24
Procession from Sainte-Catherine St. West to Esplanade Tranquille

Nine creatures from the forest bring their benevolent presence to the urban landscape, inviting spectators of all ages to celebrate nature. They are descendants of trees, moving slowly as they spread waves of greenness and enchantment.

This show by Toxique Trottoir is co-presented by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, the National Theatre School of Canada and the Regroupement des arts de rue du Québec.

Place Pasteur in the Quartier Latin

Place Pasteur will be transformed into a harbour where the public can take a break with an installation made of recycled rope by Maelle Bellemin and Shaza Bazzi. A place rich with intertwined stories that invites you to sit among the ropes and stay grounded in the present.

Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Quartier des Spectacles

Exposition Vibrer ensemble, 20 ans d’expériences mémorables

Promenade des Artistes

Cette exposition, conçue par Urbania, célèbre les 20 ans du Quartier des spectacles à travers le prisme des souvenirs qu’il a su créer dans le cœur des citoyen·ne·s, des artisan·e·s et des artistes qui ont contribué à son émergence et à son essor, ou qui en ont été les témoins privilégié·e·s. Ce projet participatif, composé de sept tableaux met en valeur toutes les facettes du Quartier.

20 ans d’audace et de culture - Vidéoprojection hommage

Façade du pavillon Président-Kennedy de l’UQAM

Réalisée par l’artiste multidisciplinaire Élizabeth Laferrière, la vidéoprojection rend hommage aux artistes, artisan·e·s et professionnels dont le parcours est fortement lié au Quartier des spectacles. Elle met en lumière 20 portraits réunissant 25 personnalités remarquables, ainsi qu’une mention toute particulière à Yvon Deschamps pour l’ensemble de sa carrière.

La grande rentrée du Quartier latin

September 7 and 8
Place Pasteur and Saint-Denis St. in the Quartier latin

For its second edition, this back-to-school event will present a packed program of music, dance, improv theatre and street performance, bookended by two big parties: the all-nighter, when local bars will stay open until 6 a.m. and a wrestling extravaganza organized by CHOQ.CA, with special appearances by CISM, CKUT and CJLO.

An event presented by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and SDC Quartier latin, in collaboration with CHOQ.CA, the Cinémathèque québécoise, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec and UQAM.

 

Fête du Quartier

Esplanade Tranquille

This annual get-together for residents of the Quartier des Spectacles will return with a program focused on culture and fine food. Free activities will be organized for residents to encourage them to meet each other and get to know the people who make the Quartier tick.

La Mécanique Ondulatoire

September 12 to 24
Façade of the WILDER Building – Espace danse

La Mécanique Ondulatoire, by Isotone and Ovvo studio, in collaboration with Ottomata studio, is an interactive video projection that explores the connections among emotions, movements and group dynamics. The experience takes a fresh look at the workings of the world and the individual’s place in society.

Over the course of a year, Japanese artist Yoshirotten created 365 hand-coloured drawings of the sun. Each one is unique, blending realism, the passing seasons and science fiction. The public is invited to discover our star through this original video projection.

Jardins Gamelin

Until September 17

The ninth season of Les Jardins Gamelin is still in full swing with a diverse program featuring up-and-coming local musicians daily from noon until night. On September 5, the Ligue d’Improvisation Musicale de Montréal (LIMM) will take over the big stage in the Jardins to perform in response to challenges and prompts from emcee Patrick Guérard.

Getting to the Quartier des spectacles

  • Public transit: numerous STM bus routes and three metro stations (orange and green lines) serve the area.
  • Cycling: numerous all-season bike lanes crisscross the downtown core, and bike racks are available at Saint-Laurent metro station, just steps away from Esplanade Tranquille. Several Bixi stations are available.
  • Driving: in addition to street parking, the district has five indoor parking garages that are open to the public.
