11 open-air movie nights, with a focus on musical themes. From the Innu community to a beautiful Polonaise from Krakow, Cinéma urbain invites its audience to explore different cultures and their stories in pictures and music.

Montreal, mardi 11 juin 2019 - For its revised and refreshed 14th edition, Cinéma urbain presents a line-up celebrating the special role of music in film, from the beginning to the present day. Every Tuesday from June 25 to September 3, the Society for Arts and Technology, in collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, will present 11 free movies, in some cases with live musical accompaniment, in others preceded by concerts, in still others followed by discussions with the artists. The net result: a fantastic series of outdoor movie-concerts with classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop and Indigenous music!
THE FIRST SCREENING: EXPLORING INDIGENOUS CULTURAL AND MUSICAL ROOTS
On June 25, the season starts with the film that just won the Iris Award for best documentary, Innu Nikamu : Chanter la résistance, by Innu filmmaker Kevin Bacon Hervieux. The film will be preceded by Wapikoni Mobile shorts Tshitashun (Number) by James Picard and Innu-Aimun (The Innu Language) by Carl Grégoire and Spencer St-Onge. Co-presented in collaboration with the Montreal First Peoples’ Festival and the National Film Board of Canada, the screening will be preceded by a ceremony led by Sedalia Fazio, a Mohawk elder from Kahnawake. It all starts at 8 p.m. in Place de la Paix. In case of rain, the screening will be held inside the SAT.
Over the course of the season, there will be a mix of classic and new Canadian and international films. Everyone is invited to come out and explore different communities and their stories. The program, prepared in close collaboration with guest curator Sandro Forte, vice-president of the Association québécoise des critiques de Cinéma (AQCC), is a celebration of peaceful coexistence – a powerful echo of Montreal’s rich cultural diversity.
