PRESS RELEASE

6.8 million people visited the Quartier des Spectacles this summer

Montreal, October 21, 2026 – The Quartier des Spectacles has wrapped a very busy summer season. From mid-May to early October, nearly 6.8 million spectators and festivalgoers* enjoyed superb outdoor programming. In all, 20 festivals and other events presented a wide range of free cultural experiences from music and dance to theatre, film, literature, circus and entertainment arts. The summer-long line-up of festivals and events is a true Quartier des Spectacles signature. It gave Montrealers and visitors exceptional access to culture, right in the heart of downtown. In addition to the events and festivals, the Quartier also hosted the 12th annual edition of Les Jardins Gamelin, the inaugural season of Tranquille à roulettes in Esplanade Tranquille and Bonjour Chien, d’ici et d’ailleurs, an urban art walk by Chien Champion.

The success of the summer program is a testament to the popularity of the festivals and the contribution of animated public spaces to downtown vitality. It reaffirms the Quartier des Spectacles as an essential cultural destination that contributes to Montreal’s international reputation as a cultural metropolis and city of festivals.

A season built on festivals

The season’s highlights include the 40th anniversary of the Festival international Nuits d’Afrique, the 20th anniversary of Festival TransAmériques (FTA) and OFFTA, and the tenth annual MAPP_MTL festival. Other notable happenings included Pouzza Fest, which hosted 1,000 artists in just three days, while Les Francos de Montréal inaugurated Montréal, faites du bruit, a series of 50 initiatives to promote francophone music and artists. The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal had a historic evening on Place des Festivals with the free show by Angine de Poitrine; Festival international Nuits d’Afrique marked its anniversary by hosting some 700 artists from more than 30 countries; Under Pressure brought together 450 artists and vendors for a three-day event; MUTEK saw its attendance grow by 42% over 2025; and TEMPÉO, Festival Danse et Musique also welcomed 43% more people than a year ago.

Animated public spaces

The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership presented its own free programming in the Quartier’s public spaces, from Place des Festivals to Place Émilie-Gamelin, Esplanade Tranquille and Sainte-Catherine St. West, complementing the festivals’ offerings and helping animate the downtown core all summer. Thanks to Les Jardins Gamelin, Place Émilie-Gamelin was once again a vibrant, welcoming and popular place for get-togethers and cultural discoveries, attracting more than 225,000 people. On Esplanade Tranquille, Tranquille à roulettes, which transforms the plaza into an open-air roller rink, has welcomed more than 30,000 skaters since opening on September 5. Meanwhile, the dogs of Bonjour Chien, d’ici et d’ailleurs, the urban art walk by Chien Champion, made people of all ages smile. In a survey of visitors** 88% said they enjoyed their Quartier des Spectacles experience.
