The organs of St James - a concert by Dr Ryan Enright

Part of the official 2026 Journées de la culture program, this event invites the public to discover one of Montreal’s remarkable heritage treasures through a one-hour commentated concert at St. James United Church, a National Historic Site of Canada. The event will showcase the church’s majestic organ, an exceptional instrument with a history spanning more than 135 years.

Before the concert, a 30-minute guided tour will introduce visitors to the history of the building and the evolution of its organ. Originally built in 1889 by the Montreal firm Edward D. Wadsworth & Bros., the instrument has been modified and restored several times and still retains a significant portion of its original pipework. Its recent restoration has preserved its historic character while incorporating modern technologies.

The concert will be presented by Dr. Ryan Enright. A varied repertoire will allow audiences to appreciate the instrument’s rich sound and versatility, including its spectacular 32-foot Bombarde, its Vox Humana, inspired by nineteenth-century English models, and several historic ranks dating from the Wadsworth era.

Designed for all ages, the event will offer a special experience for young visitors. Children will be invited to approach the console, observe the organist, explore the keyboards and pedals, and discover how thousands of pipes bring music to life. An educational, inspiring, and accessible experience celebrating Montreal’s musical heritage.
