The Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal presents THE LGBTQ+ CABINET OF CURIOSITIES : For a strong, positive image of sexual diversity!

From August 1 to 20, 2017, at 405, Sainte-Catherine Street East (NE corner of Saint-
Denis, at UQÀM), the Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal (CIAC-
MTL) will present a cultural event advocating tolerance and openness towards sexual
diversity.

The event, coinciding with Pride Montreal, will feature the significant contributions of
public personalities, artists and community organizations actively involved in the
development of LGBTQ+ communities in Montreal, Quebec and Canada. Like old cabinets of curiosities, it will include works and artefacts. The program will also include film screenings and meetings with personalities fostering openness and tolerance towards different sexualities for a better understanding of LGBTQ+ realities.

The event was designed by CIAC MTL director Claude Gosselin. “Historically,” he says, “the development of societies and civilizations has shown that the social, economic and cultural lives of human groups are intimately linked. Our era is no exception and that’s why we’ve assembled artists and individuals who have witnessed the deep changes of our contemporary society.”

The selected artists hail from dance, literature, the visual arts, and cinema. They include
Michel Marc Bouchard, CHROMOGENIC CURMUDGEONS (Evergon & J.-J. Ringuette), Jean-Paul Daoust, Evergon, JJ Levine, Lez Spread The Word (LSTW), Kent Monkman,Jean-Jacques Ringuette, Chloé Robichaud, André Roy, Vincent Warren, and Oz Yilmaz. Community organizations include Archives gaies du Québec, Arc-en- ciel d’Afrique, Coalition des familles LGBT, Fondation Émergence, Fondation Jasmin-Roy, GRIS-Montréal, RÉZO. On display will be the official document of Quebec’s first homosexual civil marriage uniting Michael Hendricks and René LeBoeuf. Laurent McCutcheon and The Homophobia Research Chair (UQÀM) will also take part in the event. The LGBTQ+ Cabinet of Curiosities remains a work in progress that will be enhanced by new elements over time since it is expected to go on tour.
