In the early 20th century, the group of composers called Les Six got together every Saturday evening surrounded by musicians, but also by painters and writers, among them Jean Cocteau. After supper, with their friends, off they would go to the Foire du Trône or to admire the Fratellini brothers at the Cirque Médrano. The evening would end at Darius Milhaud’s or at the bar Gaya. Cocteau read his last poems. Le bœuf sur le toit was played (which would become Cinéma-fantaisie). A few hundred kilometers from there, Walton was doing likewise, frequenting Edith Sitwell, Cocteau’s London counterpart. “The enfant terrible of English music” would find inspiration in her poems to write Façade, which gave rise to a real scandal.
