5, 4, 3, 2, 1 -- Lights! On February 27, the Cinémathèque québécoise joined the ranks of the cultural venues that are part of the illuminated route of the Quartier des spectacles.

One hundred people braved the rain to participate in the inauguration of this lighting project, holding sparklers in one hand and hot chocolate (graciously provided by Juliette et Chocolat) in the other. The new lighting, designed by Lightemotion and realized as a collaboration between the Quartier des spectacles Partnership and the Cinémathèque québécoise, will emphasize the presence of an important cultural actor on a cinema-oriented block of the Quartier des spectacles.

Lightemotion developed the concept of a space of light in motion, illuminating the building in a metaphor for the moving images that make up a film, using a screen of oscillating pixels and other components. The older, more classical, part of the building gets a much more subtle treatment; beams of light pick out pilasters from the darkness like performers in a spotlight. As at other neighbourhood cultural venues, the luminous signature developed by light artist Axel Morgenthaler -- the distinctive double line of red dots, now dynamic! -- makes an appearance.

Keep an eye out for the many lighting premieres coming up in the Quartier des spectacles in 2009!
