Retired hockey star Steve Guibord is the new independent MP for Prescott–Makadewà–Rapides-aux-Outardes, a riding struggling to cope with blockades organized by the local aboriginal people and by truckers. It’s a big dilemma for Guibord, but he’s facing an even bigger one in Parliament, where a Conservative MP’s plan to abstain on a war motion leaves him with the deciding vote. Fortunately, Candide, an intern from Haiti, is there to help out. This political fable is a goldmine for Philippe Falardeau, channelling Frank Capra in a gentle, ironic exploration of the workings of our beloved democracy. An invigorating, funny and poignant Patrick Huard excels as Guibord, opposite Irdens Exandus, who’s perfect as the not-so-naïve Candide, while Paul Doucet pays hilarious tribute to the former prime minister, Stephen Harper.
