Can documentaries adopt the codes of horror films? This descent into the darkness invites us to reflect on documentary cinema driven by atmospheres and sensations.
We're all familiar with horror films that present themselves as documentaries, like The Blair Witch Project, but what happens when a documentary adopts the codes of a horror film? What happens when you watch a documentary as if it were a horror film? The "Documentaires d'épouvante" program offers a descent into darkness: Jennie Williams' Nalujuk Night depicts an eerie Inuit tradition, director of Skinamarink Kyle Edward Ball's Bitesized Nightmares features nightmare narratives, and Simon Plouffe's Forêts, after this introduction, reveals itself in all its social and ecological horror. Together, they reflect on the permeability of genres and documentary cinema driven by atmospheres and sensations.
This screening is offered for free as part of Doc-to-doc and will be followed by a discussion with Laurence Olivier (Avancer masqué), who programmed the film, and Simon Plouffe (Forêts).
