The rise of Charles Aznavour in the 1950s. From cabaret singer to anonymous lyricist, to dedicated composer, and finally to a glorious crooner, he became the most celebrated Francophone artist in the world through his hard work and resilience, until his death in 2018. Tahar Rahim impresses and excels as the young Aznavour in a film that not only focuses on the artist but also highlights the importance of his entourage (and what an entourage it was for Aznavour: Édith Piaf, Juliette Gréco, Gilbert Bécaud). By setting the core of the story in the 1950s, the filmmakers avoid the expected, apart from the urge to immediately revisit the great Charles's discography. The effort put into reconstructing the Paris of that era is masterful.
