Cinéma Quartier Latin Book

The voice of a deceased hippopotamus opens the film with a warning that it can explain very little, except for the fact that it was captured in a river in Namibia and then brought to Colombia by the famous cocaine trafficker, Pablo Escobar. The animal, nicknamed "Pepe" by the Colombian press, tells its story in fragmented pieces, as if its soul is drifting above a river where fiction intertwines with documentary and experimentation, where black and white flirts with colour, and where seriousness juggles with the fantastic. Behind this discontinuous cine-poem lies a fierce critique of capitalism and colonialism. Winner of the Best Direction award at the Berlinale.
