In Matthew Rankin's Winnipeg, saffron tea is sipped at Tim Hortons, architectural heritage is celebrated at the shopping mall, turkeys roam freely, and young Negin and Nazgûl try to retrieve a 500-riel bill (a currency named in honour of the great Louis Riel) trapped in the ice. Meanwhile, Matthew, a Montreal civil servant, returns home to take care of his sick mother… The director of The Twentieth Century (FNC 2019) imagines an Iranian bubble in the Prairies, a parallel universe, naturally offbeat, often hilarious, but also strangely meditative and deeply moving. His 'autobiographical hallucination' pays a vibrant tribute to the Iranian cinema of Kiarostami and Makhmalbaf with a consistently creative intelligence and irresistible charm.
