Join us for a krump demonstration battle where Montreal krumpers take on Oklahoma turfers.
Drawing inspiration from clowning, African dances and rituals, as well as the frantic gestures of MCs, krump fuses movements of remarkable expressivity and energy. Performers use their passion and emotions to tell a story, mainly using their arms, feet and chest.
Turfing first emerged in the 1990s in the predominantly black communities of Oakland, California. The acronym TURF reminds its practitioners to “Take Up Room on the Floor.” In addition to the festive, playful aspect of the dance, an important part of turfing lies in storytelling through the pantomime and the creation of optical illusions with the body and movement. All the music is improvised during the night, which makes every event unique.
Presented by Montreal Krump Alliance.
