The concert opens with one of Jean Sibelius’ most poetic and mysterious works, Rakastava (The Lover). Here listeners can experience deep empathy and a sense of the vast Nordic landscapes where legends are born and flourish. This is followed by another rare work featuring the timpani: Mozart’s short Serenata notturna (Nocturn Serenade). Part 1 of this concert is relatively short because the masterpiece we offer in Part 2 is monumental in scale: one of Haydn’s most fully realized compositions, The Seven Last Words of Christ, in an instrumental version for string orchestra. A formidable work of spiritual insight which, from the depths of the initial introduction to the fury of the final earthquake, makes an impression that is truly unforgettable.
