A 35-minute setting of The Passion according to John by Jean-Pierre Couturier for four singers and violoncello is written for the Office of Holy Friday and explores a neo-modal language inspired by Gregorian chant, intoned declamation and 20th c. neomodality.

First performed in its version for three singers in 1986 at the Montréal Catholic cathedral Marie-Reine-du-Monde, Couturier’s The Passion exists in French, Italian and English. It has been heard on CBC Radio Canada more than one. The Italian version distributed in Canada, Bulgaria and Italy, has appeared under the Disques Benedictus label.

St. James united Church is proud to present a live performance of this sacred seminal work in its original context of a liturgical office, inviting the larger community to share in the Holy Week celebrations and supporting Canadian music.

Holy Friday, April 7, 2023, at noon.

Alexandra Fol, Valérie Walker, Claudine Ledoux et Marc-Antoine-d’Aragon, singers
Nicolas Cousineau, violoncelle
