SHALL I COMPARE YOU TO A SUMMER'S DAY? (BASHTAALAK SA’AT)
Two men meet and fall in love. A female narrator recounts their story as a fairy tale, dreaming of a happily-ever-after. As it happens, love stories are not that simple in this first feature by Egyptian filmmaker Mohammad Shawky Hassan. Freely inspired by Shakespeare’s famous Sonnet 18, the film transposes the Elizabethan ode to beauty and love to the LGBTQ community of contemporary Cairo and to a group of polyamorous young men. Playful, startling and multifaceted, switching between musical set pieces, theatre, personal narrative and the Arabian Nights, "Shall I Compare You to a Summer's Day?" throws a wrench into normativity, both moral and narrative.
