STEFFIE BÉLANGER | SERVEZ À CE MONSIEUR UNE BIÈRE ET DES KIWIS
From October 28 to December 11, 2021.
The exhibition “Servez à ce monsieur une bière et des kiwis,” that its aim is to give the impression that the works are dancing, sipping a drink or welcoming guests, uses the theme of a festive event. A specific behavior is attributed to each sculpture mainly made of wood, which is reflected in its movement and its title.
For example, “J’ai pleuré dans mon char” rocks from one side of the room to the other, while looking at the squeaky passage of “J’ai fait semblant d’aimer ça.” The proposed titles are gleaned here and there, read or heard; they caught the artist's attention. Words are always the starting point of the work and grant a certain personality, like the title of the exhibition which is a prefabricated phrase in Word under the watermark insertion tab. Quite intriguing, it turned out to be the perfect starting point for an exhibition idea for the sculptor, who then imagined her sculptures in an social event. That’s why all of the titles chosen have something hinting at behavior that can be done before, during and after a show.
