Galerie de l’UQAM will be presenting Mending, an on-site exhibition that revisits Université du Québec à Montréal’s vast art collection using key works and a critical approach.
Mending reengages with the Université du Québec à Montréal Art Collection, an artistic legacy spanning half a century and over 4,000 works of art. This updated cross-section of works reflects a diverse corpus of art from Québec and around the world spotlighting new acquisitions and overlooked, or even neglected, pieces from our catalogue. Whether as artists, art historians, or museum curators, the work of selecting what is shown demands a reflexive approach on the part of its practitioners: naming, tracing, amending, rewriting, remaking, replaying, repairing.
Some of the works culled for this exhibition allow us to glimpse certain sore spots – and blind spots – that, particularly noticeable nowadays, can weaken social contracts. When we examine the collection, with an eye to its enrichment or to its didactic purpose, we must contend with its multiple narratives, namely that of a preordained cultural legacy vis-à-vis the need for greater fairness, inclusiveness, empathy, and openness to transformation.
The title of the show, Mending, contains allusions to crafting and salvaging, to the act of repairing, sparingly and responsibly. These actions bely a commitment to principles that are needed now more than ever. By interweaving the various statements contained in these works, this exhibition shows us where we might go from here.
