The establishment of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield was linked closely with industrialization. Much water has flowed under the bridge since the first Beauharnois canal was dug, until the construction of the existing canal of the same name. The exhibit is the fruit of many years of research and compilation work by dozens of volunteers working with the Écomusée des Deux-Rives and the Société d'histoire et de généalogie de Salaberry.
