In the House of Paul-Émile offers insight into the life and work of Paul Émile Borduas, as well as his impact both nationally and internationally.

Besides the beauty and originality of the design, which make the house a masterpiece of cultural heritage and national architecture, Borduas's house becomes one of the most important strategic centres of the intellectual and artistic avant-garde. The artist himself designed and built the house in his hometown of Saint Hilaire and settles there with his wife and their three children in the summer of 1945.

The house is considered one of his masterpieces, since Borduas aims to integrate all the details. It is also where Borduas wrote Refus global [Global Refusal], a manifesto drafted and signed by 15 innovative Quebec artists of that period.

One of the exhibit's objectives is to demystify the artist by following him in his daily life and to examine the influence that his living environment had on his art. We will follow Borduas through the milestones of his career, from his apprenticeship years to his death in Paris in 1960.

In the House of Paul-Émile is complemented by original documentary videos and includes the presentation of an art book entitled "Éternel present" [Eternal Present], which was compiled to mark the 50th anniversary of Refus global.
