“We laugh to forget our pain.” This first film by Rogerio Soares exposes the tragic fate of four families forced to relocate after the construction of the world’s biggest hydroelectric dam, on the Amazon, along with new real estate developments. The film gives us an intimate understanding of the human consequences of megaprojects in Brazil, built without any real concern for residents’ well-being. Political and poetic, and beautifully filmed, River Silence is also a tribute to the incredible resilience of men and women whose daily struggle normally happens in obscurity.
