You might think there are no Second World War stories left to tell, but Jonathan Durand zooms in on the tragic fate of nearly a million Poles forced into exile in Iran, India and Africa after the Soviets invaded their country in 1940. With his own grandmother’s story as the starting point for a quest for identity in which the past gradually comes into focus, the filmmaker combines rigorous archival research with poignant testimonials by the survivors of an odyssey that lasted ten years and that is only now coming to light.
