LA RIVIÈRE SANS REPOS
In Kuujjuaq, just after the Second World War, Elsa gives birth to Jimmy. Although she got pregnant from a rape, the young Inuk cherishes her baby. Torn between family traditions and a westernized lifestyle, she leaves her village and loved ones with her son, heading for an uncle’s isolated camp. Adapted, with Madeleine Ivalu, from the novel by Gabrielle Roy, Marie-Hélène Cousineau’s latest film tells the story of a woman’s quest for independence and resistance to forced assimilation, against a majestic Nunavik backdrop.
