Synopsis:
A subway grates out of the station as two men meet for a paid hook-up and, over the course of an emotionally honest and sexually frank character study, they will careen in and out of each other’s lives, taking sledgehammers to one another’s defenses and preconceptions. Filmed with nervy assurance and intensity by debut director Kai Kreuser, Label Me is Pretty Woman if Pretty Woman were a layered, explicit slice of social realism. Blond-haired, blue-eyed Lars (Nikolaus Benda) is the most frequent customer of Waseem (Renato Schuch), a Syrian hustler recently arrived in Cologne. Spending his days objectified and fearful of the violence permeating his communal refugee shelter, Waseem is filled with a gnawing rage, leaving him resentful and hollow-eyed, unable to sleep. Though Waseem is loath to admit it, Lars may be the only one more interested in his intrinsic value than the body he offers, despite the transactional relationship they maintain. When a series of soul-crushing or – defining events forces him to confront their connection, Waseem is given a choice between letting his despair devour him alive or recognizing his essential worth.
