By intertwining the destinies of Pauline and Suzanne, two women brought together by a personal crisis, Agnès Varda paints a lively portrait not just of an era, but also of a burgeoning movement that remains uncomfortably relevant in the present day. Tackling abortion, sexual freedom, education and women’s friendship, Varda follows her two protagonists - an aspiring singer and a mother of two - from 1962 to 1976 in this trenchant manifesto-cum-fairy-tale French musical.

The screening on October 19th will be followed by a discussion with Rosanna Maule (associate professor of Film Studies at Concordia) and Guylaine Dionne (director and professor) about Agnès Varda's work and her influence on contemporary female directors.
