From September 5th to October 6th, 2019.

Reflecting on mythologies of the divine feminine, Lesley Anderson presents a body of work that references the nine muses of Greek mythology, depicting vessels, laurel, birds, springs and mountains, referencing symbolism from antiquity and poetry.

Her painting “Clio” (2019), representing two vessels and flowing water, is inspired by water vessels used by the Greeks to measure the passage of time. The painting “Minerva Visits the Muses” (2019) is based on Ovid’s poem in “Metamorphoses,” which tells the story of how the muses took shelter in the home of Pyrenaeus until he tried to rape them. The muses then transformed into birds, spread their wings and flew away from the high tower of his house.

Through these abstracted narratives and symbolic representations, Anderson explores the dynamics of femininity, courage and transformational power. Also explored, is duality in these archetypal feminine figures. Not all benevolence and grace, the goddesses are multifaceted and dynamic, capable of bestowing gifts but also of jealously, vanity, vengefulness and pride.

Opening with the artist, on Thursday September 5th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
