This is Soda’s first feature-length documentary, and his first film shot in Japan – a landmark work, in which the director’s precise vision of reality heralds his future direction. By following the chaotic election campaign of Kazuhiko Yamauchi, an inexperienced, uncharismatic candidate parachuted into politics by the country’s Liberal Democratic Party, the director reveals an already well-defined style: great observational cinema, methodical, incisive, and with a certain sense of humour.
