In Un amour d’été (Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature, RIDM 2015), Jean- François Lesage roamed Mount Royal, capturing lovers’ conversations. The director’s sensitive approach turned the mountain into a self-contained world where intimate discussions happen naturally. Two years later, Lesage took his camera into a forest resembling a timeless cocoon. Once again, nature seems to loosen people’s tongues, prompting confessions of every kind – inspiring, tormented, poignant, awkward and, always, deeply human. Going against the grain of the current trend to put screens between each other at all times, The Hidden River invites us to contemplate nature’s mysterious beauty and rediscover the importance of sharing some time together.
