Théâtre du Nouveau Monde is where classic plays, old and new, come to life.
I have had the privilege of directing the TNM for nearly 25 years. During that time, I have learned that it is essential to preserve indelible traces of the ephemeral art of theatre.
To celebrate the TNM’s 65th anniversary, we wanted, with the cooperation of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, to adorn the walls of the city with the work of an exceptional photographer, the sharpest observer of our productions. It is important to us to honour a man who, from the shadows, shines a magical light on the characters inhabiting our inventive sets.
And so you will see, through Yves Renaud’s perceptive eye, the many facets of our theatre over the course of two decades. These photographs capture the depth of a character’s emotions, the beauty of a costume, the power of a well-designed set, the transcendent art of lighting. I hope you’ll enjoy this inspiring journey to the heart of the TNM’s proud history.

Creative freedom
“Unlike studio work, where there are many decisions to be made –
lighting, composition, angles and so on – theatre photography requires
that you work with the elements available to you. Some might see
that as a constraint, but I find it frees me from having to make those
decisions, allowing me to concentrate on what I love: creating and filling
a frame, transposing living art to a dynamic image.”
Intense focus
“I try to photograph actions rather than make photographs of actors.
When characters are seen in context, the image is more theatrical, and
therefore richer. In my photos, I try to reflect all the work that goes into
the play, from the actors to the unseen creative people who design the
sets, lighting, costumes and props.”
Capturing the magic
“I work in the shadows. That’s my comfort zone. When I enter the theatre,
it feels like I’m going to my office. No matter how the stage is set, no
matter the size of the show, I always have the same goal: to capture the
best moments.”
Everyone knows theatre is an ephemeral art. Afterwards, nothing remains but memories. Yves Renaud’s talent does us the honour of making the theatre live forever.
