Whether appearing in Sydney, Paris, London, Rio, Berlin, Tokyo, Moscow, New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, Les Ballets Africains’ performances are always greeted with enthusiastic ovations and open invitations to return. Consisting of 35 members and recognized as the National Dance Company of the Republic of Guinea, the troupe embodies the authenticity of African dance, incorporating Guinean instruments and traditional costumes.Founded in Paris in 1952 by Keïta Fodéba, a renowned Guinean choreographer who benefited from the support of many African heads of state, Les Ballets Africains toured the world to great success until Guinea’s independence in 1958, when it was invited to become the country’s national ensemble. From 1958 to the present day, Les Ballets Africains has visited every corner of the globe, sometimes touring for two consecutive years, performing in 165 capital cities, giving 695 performances in 750 days, traveling 180,000 kilometres by plane, 33,000 by train, and 21,000 by road!Members of Les Ballets Africains have been recognized and encouraged in their role as roving ambassadors, carrying with them the pride and aspirations of their people. The company’s ultimate mission is to foster a better understanding of Africa, with the aim of creating conditions conducive to healthy and fruitful cooperation between Guinea and the rest of the world.
