Light on the Gesù: An Ideas Competition
The setting for the lighting of the first “electric candle” in Canada, Montreal's only entirely baroque church houses the oldest operating performance hall in Quebec. This highly symbolic venue is about to come out of the shadows.
As part of the ideas competition for the illumination of the Gesù’s facade, designers and other creative professionals were invited to submit their proposals for architectural and scenographic lighting that will reveal the singular personality of the Gesù, classified as a cultural asset since 1975. The challenge of the competition was to express, through a lighting design concept, the artistic and cultural vocation of the Gesù, while honoring its scared, private and silent dimensions.
A jury composed of members known for their activities in the fields of architecture, heritage conservation, lighting and the arts, chose from among 37 entries submitted by a wide array of creators (architects, designers, students, etc.) from three continents. They had the authority to evaluate projects submitted to the competition, along the following criteria:
- The concept's ability to highlight the heritage that the Gesù represents;
- The degree to which the concept communicates the Gesù's identity and presence within the broader context of Quartier des Spectacles;
- The innovative and aesthetic qualities of the project as well as the experience created by the installation.
