THIS MAY TO OCTOBER, PLACE ÉMILIE-GAMELIN WILL BE LIVELIER THAN EVER

_Press release - For immediate release_

Montreal, May 12, 2015 – At an official opening event last Thursday, nearly 5,000 people had a preview of the ambiance of Les Jardins Gamelin, the new temporary setup for Place Émilie-Gamelin. Until October 4, the space will feature activities from early morning until 11 p.m., seven days a week. Whether you want to have a snack while enjoying relaxing music, join a public debate or an afternoon jam session, take a dance lesson, see an outdoor concert or have a drink with friends, Les Jardins Gamelin is the place to be all spring and summer.

Les Jardins Gamelin: a green oasis in the heart of downtown

May 7 to October 4, - 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.Free Wi-Fi

The new setup designed by Pépinière & co. includes repurposed shipping containers that host a bar and restaurant, including an adjoining patio with shaded wood tables. The patio is covered by an illuminated awning and surrounded by urban agriculture containers made from pallets. Nearby, a small circular stage will feature live entertainment for people relaxing on the patio. There is also a lawn with wood chairs available for visitors.

In the evening, the Jardins will be illuminated in true Quartier des Spectacles style, with the sculpture by Melvin Charney, which has been illuminated since last year, the enormous suspended-net sculpture 1.26 by Janet Echelman and an architectural video projection on Place Dupuis, 9 x [MTL] by Gabriel Poirier-Galarneau and Vincent Bilodeau.

Le comptoir des Jardins Gamelin: restaurant and bar

May 7 to October 4, - 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The restaurant and bar menu showcases fresh, mainly local products prepared by chef Marc-André Lavergne (Nomade So6 and formerly of Accords). In May, the menu includes a steamed bun with sriracha-seasoned sausage, a grilled meatball sandwich, and a pair of Caesar salads: lobster or watermelon, feta and aioli. Foodies will enjoy Thursday BBQ, weekend brunches and other special gourmet events that will take place over the coming months.

Things to see and do (everything is free!)

The program of activities, produced by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and Pépinière & co., in collaboration with several partners, will include recurring events over the months ahead, including karaoke Sundays; an Agora libre with public debates every Monday; spoken-word poetry with slam Tuesdays; up-and-coming musical acts every Saturday; free dance lessons every Monday evening; the Wednesday l’Escalier lunchtime concert series and Soul Thursdays with lunchtime sets with Andy Williams, DJ from The Goods Soundsystem…

Several festivals and other events will also be held in Les Jardins Gamelin. Both Montréal complètement cirque and Montreal Pride are returning this year, while OFFTA, Piknic electronik en ville, the Festival international de la littérature and Festival Montréal Country will all hold activities in the space for the first time. There will also be a number of one-off events such as Différents comme tout le monde and Culture Montréal’s annual picnic.

New activities will be announced evolving over the course of the season. Keep up-to-date by regularly visiting: quartierdesspectacles.com or facebook.com/LesJardinsGamelin

May focus: OFFTA

In May, OFFTA will be based in Place Émilie-Gamelin for the first time, presenting outdoor performances co-produced by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership. Dedicated to young avant-garde live artists, this festival’s artistic direction focuses on strong, unique approaches, emerging disciplines and experimentation.

Urban agriculture in Les Jardins Gamelin

Urban agriculture is an important part of the Jardins Gamelin concept. The democratization and encouragement of agriculture in the city are at the heart of the mandate of Sentier urbain, the organization in charge of this portion of Les Jardins Gamelin. Community groups active on the site and their clients will be invited to help maintain the garden plots and will enjoy the produce they grow.

As the seasons pass, vegetation and produce will flourish in four areas:

• the permaculture garden: black currants, beebalm, kale, red spinach, lavender…
• the forest garden: a miniature forest ecosystem with peanuts, ferns, raspberries…
• the honey garden for urban pollinators: hyssop, borage, goldenrod, willow herb…
• the kitchen garden: Swiss chard, sunflower, nasturtium, mint…

Sentier Urbain will hold discovery sessions and workshops.

Discover the Gardens: an opportunity to learn about urban agriculture techniques and the different types of plants in the gardens, how to grow them and their medicinal and food value.
Topical workshops: learn the basic principles for planning a garden, choosing plants and making the most of limited space.
